Our journey began with a moment of frustration, but it quickly evolved into something much bigger — a vision to reinvent how patients experience the healing process. What started with a single, personal experience has now become a transformative shift in the healthcare industry.
The inspiration for Castomize came when one of our co-founders broke their arm. As they struggled with the discomfort of a traditional cast — itchy, sweaty, and restrictive. The frustration wasn’t just personal; it was a shared experience for anyone who had been immobilised by a cast. At that moment, we saw this as an opportunity to leverage our expertise and create a better solution.
Our co-founder, Abel Teo, shared, “When one of us broke their arm and we saw how uncomfortable and impractical the traditional cast was, it was clear there had to be a better way. This wasn’t just about improving comfort; it was about rethinking the entire healing process.”
This moment of discomfort became the driving force behind Castomize — a company dedicated to creating personalised, innovative healthcare solutions that not only solve existing medical problems but elevate the patient’s healing experience.
What makes Castomize stand out in the healthcare space is our focus on technology-driven innovation. Specifically, our breakthrough in 4D-Printing. This cutting-edge technology is an industry first and represents a new approach to patient care.
Unlike traditional 3D-printing, 4D-printing uses smart materials that can change shape in response to external factors such as temperature or pressure. This allows us to create casts that adapt throughout the healing process, rather than being a one-time, static solution. Our 4D-printed casts are designed to fit perfectly at the moment of application, but they can also be adjusted as the patient’s injury heals, providing a more comfortable and sustainable option.
As Abel explains, “With our 4D-printed casts, we’ve not only solved the comfort issue but also introduced a level of flexibility and sustainability that the industry has never seen before. The cast adapts over time to the healing process, which means fewer replacements, less waste, and greater affordability for patients.”
Additionally, our casts incorporate an assistive-moulding feature that makes application simpler and more precise, reducing discomfort during the fitting process. This level of personalization and adaptability has the potential to change the way we think about medical devices, turning them from one-size-fits-all products into customised, patient-specific solutions.
At Castomize, we know that true innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. From day one, we’ve worked closely with local clinicians in Singapore to ensure that our products meet the real-world needs of healthcare providers and patients alike. This collaboration is integral to our design process, as we continue to fine-tune our products based on feedback from those who know patient care best.
Abel emphasises, “Working with clinicians has been crucial to our development process. They provide real insights into the challenges patients face with traditional solutions, and that feedback allows us to design products that truly make a difference.”
Through these partnerships, we’ve been able to ensure that our products are not only groundbreaking in terms of technology but also practical and effective in the hands of healthcare professionals. This ongoing dialogue with clinicians helps us refine and perfect our innovations, ensuring that we’re solving real problems with each iteration.
At Castomize, we’re just getting started. The healthcare industry is ripe for disruption, and we are committed to being at the forefront of that change. With our pioneering work in 4D-printing, and the development of proprietary technologies, we are building a future where healthcare products are as individualised and dynamic as the people they serve.
Our commitment to continuous innovation means that we’re always looking for new ways to improve the patient experience. Whether it's expanding our product range or developing new intellectual properties, the road ahead is filled with possibilities. As Abel states, “We’re excited for the future, where we can take our learnings and push the boundaries even further. We believe the best is yet to come, and our journey has just begun.”
